Journal Prompts #24: On What I Thought Rituals Were For
Less Solving. More Curiosity.
I have embarked upon reading fantasy-romance again. As I shared with my husband last night, this one is about dragon riders (Rebecca Yarros’ ‘Fourth Wing'). He doesn’t get it and we laugh together as I read out loud to him a few paragraphs and dramatize every single word.
I am only a few chapters in, honestly. But I am already in love with the story, the world building and character development. And even her detailed description of all the dragons, her dragon development is so … imaginative.
I have such vivid dreams when I read stories before bed. Well that and we have been turning off our cell phones at night to full airplane mode. I wake up the next morning ready to write (shared my spoken word this morning on the gram, watch here). I wake up … creative.
This ritual really works for me right now.
Read fantasy at night.
Write spoken word poetry in the morning.
So often I feel like I have been looking for a ritual to solve a (past) challenge or problem. But what if some of our rituals we find enjoyable are actually less about anything in the past or solving and more about finding a way into the present moment and getting really curious?
Grab a pen. Grab a journal.
If I said to you, “wow, you are so creative” - what area of your life or project would I be talking about? Did you see yourself as creative there before? Why or why not?
Do you have any rituals? If so, why do you have that ritual? What does it solve for? And/or does that ritual create curiosity in any way?
If you were abducted by aliens tomorrow, where do you imagine they would take you? I know all the movies show us scary but perhaps, write something not scary? See what happens.
Mate, I am quite honestly still reeling from how much I loved loved loved Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. Completely reignited my love of epic fantasy and introduced me to romantasy. I am so delighted by books again. They can just be fun. Things, rituals, moments can just be fun, and when they're fun they become something even more. I hope you love it! xx
